Blogging and Packing

I think this is the longest I've gone between posting here, but that's because I've been playing chauffeur to my boys and trying to get everything ready for our trip to Orlando next week. I can't believe it's almost time to leave. Yikes!

I'm blogging about my upcoming trip over at Prairie Chicks Write Romance today. My question for discussion is if you're going to RWA Orlando this year and if you have any hints, tips or stories about other conferences to pass on.

I'm also hosting a guest blogger - Love Inspired Suspense author Stephanie Newton - over at Inkwell Inspirations today. Stephanie lives in Florida and her topic is about learning French and how she managed with the language while on a trip to France. Stephanie's question for discussion is if you've ever had a problem due to miscommunication or lack of it. Steph's giving away a copy of her latest release to one person who comments before Sunday midnight, July 25th.

The following photos were taken last week as I drove my boys to camp. They are all about hogging the road.


As soon as we left the town of Glenavon, we encountered this pump and hose on the road. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to drive over it, but I did. They closed the road a few days later.


About an hour later, we came up behind this farmer pulling his swather. I drove up close behind him and he just stayed at the same speed - in the middle of the road - for about a mile before he turned off. He didn't turn around once, but when I finally passed him, he tilted his head at me as if to say, 'See, that wasn't so bad.'


Now this guy was down-right scary. I looked ahead around the curve and saw this tractor trailer carrying a combine and coming up FAST. There just happened to be a road branching off to the right which I was able to pull into otherwise I would've been side-swiped! That truck was going so fast and he was all over the road. It's hard to see because of the dirty windshield, but the combine is so wide, the wheels hang over about 4 feet on either side of the lowbed.


Then on my way back, I came upon this farmer unloading his hopper into a grain truck and completely blocking the road in the process. I had to sit and wait until it was done. It only took 7 or 8 minutes, but the gall of the guy!

Well, that's prairie roads for you.

    no kidding, I have the same things. You gotta love living in an agricultural area. Some days I pass more tractors than cars.

    Have a wonderful time in Orlando, Anita! Enjoy the journey AND the destination!

    We're in a rural/ag area as well, but more livestock than crops, so our biggest traffic obstacles are herds of sheep and cows. Sometimes a thousand or more sheep at a time. Learning to drive THROUGH the herd is an acquired skill.

    My favorite traffic hindrance, though, was driving home in a blizzard late one night after Bible school, alone. Sobbing because I couldn't even see the road. Suddenly, there's this commotion around my Jeep, and I peer through the snow to see that I am being PASSED by a herd of elk. Yes, I was driving that slow. They were an answer to prayer... I was able to follow their tracks almost all the way into town.

    Deb, Susie and Niki - thank you. I'm trying real hard to have everything in place when I leave but I'm sorely running behind.

    JJ celebrated his 12th birthday today. He's so excited about going to DisneyWorld, he's headachy and queasy. His eldest sister was the same way when she became over-excited. sigh.

    I'll have to post a prayer request for him.

    Thanks for the sentiments. I'll be thinking of y'all while I'm running around in my pj's at the Harlequin party. LOL

Prairie Wildlife Photos

These days, I'm busy working on the final draft of my historical romance, Emma's Outlaw , so I thought I'd give you some photos to check out. They are all of prairie wildlife in my area. Do you remember the afternoon JJ and I sat in the van on the empty dirt road with the suspicious looking dynamite box and waited for the Mountie? Well, these cowbirds kept us company. I had this photo in mind and just needed to wait for the cowbird to take flight. I waited. And, I waited.
