Book Review: Sweet Surender

Image
Sweet Surrender by Michelle Monkou Kimani Romance Sep 06 This my first Kimani Romance and as such, I’m having a hard time writing this review. Normally, I try to concentrate on the entertainment value of the story itself and ignore small writing problems. But this time I can’t do it. I found this story to be filled with inconsistencies I’m going to call plot holes. At least if I had critiqued this prior to publication, I would have thrown up numerous red flags so the author could have changed things. At the end of each chapter, the author wrote a hook about a pivotal part of the story to get me to eagerly turn the page. And, I did. But the new chapter started somewhere else. Usually, no mention was even made of how much time had passed between the chapter ending and the new scene. I’d read on, still eager to find out where the chapter ending hook story led. But the closest I came to closure was a mere paragraph or sentence of explantion. Yet a couple of these chapter endings should hav...

Book Review: Nelson's Brand

Image
Nelson’s Brand by Diana Palmer Silhouette Desire 618 - Jan 91 This is my first Diana Palmer book and although it’s almost a decade old and Gene used a high-handedness he wouldn’t be able to get away with today, there was still enough mystery and spice to keep me thoroughly engulfed in the story. Gene Nelson had the world in his hand. Everything was going his way and then the unthinkable happened. His father died and left a letter behind that ripped apart Gene’s world. Suddenly, Gene is spinning out of control. He’s trying to drink himself into oblivion. Emotionally lost and confused, he’s hitting out at anything and everything including women. If they want to bed him that’s fine with him – just don’t expect him to acknowledge them in the morning. For months, Gene is adrift in a sea of despair. Then one night, he’s sitting at the bar when he notices a woman. Not just any women, but his half-brother’s fiancee’s best friend. He doesn’t know why and he doesn’t stop to think about it, but w...

Book Review: Nobody's Child

Image
Nobody’s Child by Ann Major Silhouette Desire 1105 – Nov 97 Reading this book was like riding a roller coaster. It was exceptional when it was good but at least three times, I had the urge to put it away and quit reading. And I think that was because it was so repetitive. I might have a bad memory but I don’t need to be reminded of that time on the island every few pages. Business magnate, Cutter Lord, went to a secluded island to ‘deal’ with his brother’s girlfriend. Cutter was determined to show her up for the gold-digger she was but instead, he fell under her spell and claimed her for his own. A couple days later, he disappeared. Cheyenne Rose didn’t know where he went but he didn’t return her calls and put himself out of her reach. When she found herself pregnant with his child, she agreed to marry Cutter’s brother after all. Flash forward 7 yrs. Cutter’s brother has been murdered and his widow, Cheyenne, has to auction off their possessions to pay their creditors. Enter Cutter who...

Book Review: The Borrowed Bride

Image
The Borrowed Bride by Elizabeth Lane Harlequin Historical #920 Nov 08 This is a great book and I really enjoyed reading it. I like being near people of integrity because they make me want to rise above myself and the two main characters in this book oozed with honor as well as tension. I wanted to read the next page...the next chapter...to find out if Quint, the younger brother, was going to come back and the emotional explosion it would entail. Hannah Gustavson grew up alongside Judd Seavers’ younger brother, Quint. Being a decade older, Hannah didn’t really know Judd and in fact, ran from his forbidding countenance. Hannah had always loved Quint, but Quint had wanderlust. He just wasn’t ready to settle down yet. Hannah had kept Quint’s ‘roving hands’ under control but somehow, the day before he left to satisfy his wanderlust, she gave in to his male urge. It was a decision she regretted immediately after – before she even realized the full implication of the deed But Quint left the n...

Book Review: The Italian Count's Baby

Image
The Italian Count's Baby by Amy Andrews HP Extra: Mediterranean Doctors Oct 08 This book made me cry. Sure, it's a steamy romance, but it's so much more. The author didn't just have the characters move forward in their relationship, she gave them rich yet painful histories that impacted every step they took in their journey. It wasn't just emotional baggage. She compounded the problems in the heroine's past until I, as a reader, wondered how Katya could ever have turned out as well as she did. Oh wait--that explains why she...no, I'd better not say that... What would you do if you got pregnant from a one-night stand yet had a past so disturbing you couldn't imagine bringing another child into it in case history repeated itself? And even though you love the life growing inside you more than you love living, you'd rather leave your baby with its father than bring it home and tempt fate. What if your baby's father, Count Benedetto Medici, had wealt...

Book Review: Abbie's Outlaw

Image
Abbie's Outlaw by Victoria Bylin - Harlequin Historical #750 - Apr 05 I cried buckets reading this book. A strong woman. A flawed hero. Wills that clash. Love that endures. Wow! You want to know what the scariest part of this book is? How does Vicki know this stuff? How did she research for it? I cried enough reading the book without knowing what I'd do if I found out there's even a grain of personal experience involved. And no, I can't tell you what I'm talking about, but I'll give you a hint: John Leaf is what we like to call a ‘bad boy'. He took Abbie's innocence, gave her a child and walked away without a backward glance to continue his bad boy ways. Suffice to say that young Abbie Windsor did what she had to do to survive. Her main concern was for her daughter to have a decent life regardless of any personal sacrifice Abbie had to endure. Now, 15 yrs later, Abbie and her daughter are back in John's life. Only, he's not a ‘bad boy' any lo...

Book Review: Her Kind of Cowboy

Image
This review was originally posted to my book review blog on the eharlequin site. I wasn't going to post this here because I didn't want to embarrass the author but I have 'heard' other authors wondering if they're the only ones making a mistake. The answer is NO and the proof is here: Her Kind of Cowboy by Pat Warren Silhouette Special Edition 1638 - Sep 04 Except for the screw-up listed below, this book drew me in and kept me there! It's the story of first love and what should have been. Only it didn't happen that way. Jesse Calder's final words to 19 yr old Abby was that he'd be back. But due to a horrific accident, he couldn't keep his promise right away. And when he was finally able to contact her, he was told to stay away - that she'd married someone else. But 7 yrs later, unrecognizable due to the accident, he's back. And this time, he not only falls for Abby again, but for her daughter as well who just happens to have familiar blue...
